HERMITAGE OF SAINT MICHAEL

The hermitage, or shrine, of Saint Michael is a beautiful example of a building in the transition between Romanesque and Gothic. Its history dates back to 1227 and next to it was a lazaretto, a hospital for the treatment of infectious diseases such as leprosy. Unlike other temples that were renovated over time, the hermitage of Saint Michael still has an admirable stylistic unity, a pointer to the fact that it was built in a single phase. The pointed arches of the windows are notable features of its architecture, characteristic of the Gothic style, which was already beginning to impose itself at the time it was built. The decoration of the corbels, the small pieces of stone under the roof eaves, deserves special attention. On them you can see plant motifs, animal figures and some representations of human forms which, as in so many Romanesque constructions, contain meanings that invite reflection.
