THE FITERO BRIDGE

The Fitero bridge, in Itero de la Vega, is much more than a work of medieval engineering: it’s a threshold on the Camino de Santiago, a stone gateway through which thousands of pilgrims have passed over the centuries. Built by order of King Alfonso VI of León at the end of the 11th century, this majestic bridge, 150 metres long, with eleven semi-circular arches, was erected as the only way of crossing the River Pisuerga. And even today it continues to fulfil its purpose, standing firm as a witness to the incessant flow of the Camino. Despite numerous restorations over the years, especially in the 18th century, the bridge has retained its original essence, reflecting the solidity and elegance of medieval architecture. Its importance is not only practical, but also symbolic: when pilgrims cross it, they leave behind the province of Burgos and enter Palencia, following the historical path to Santiago de Compostela. In the past, this river was also the entry point to the ancient county of Monzón, and in administrative terms it separated Itero del Castillo in Burgos from Itero de la Vega in Palencia. Beyond its historical and architectural value, the Fitero bridge is a good place for pause and contemplation. Many pilgrims stop here, captivated by the serenity of the surroundings, the lilting sound of the water and the feeling that they are treading the same stones that so many others have walked before them. At this point, the Camino is not just a physical route, but also an inner journey.
